Common mistakes when specifying lighting for classified areas (and how to avoid them)
In industrial environments with risk of explosive atmospheres, incorrect lighting specification can directly impact safety, regulatory compliance, and operational continuity. Despite technological advancements and the availability of certified solutions, it is still common to find technical decisions that may compromise project performance.
The following are some of the most common mistakes when selecting luminaires for Ex applications:
1. Failure to correctly validate the zone classification.
One of the most critical mistakes is specifying equipment for Zone 2 in applications that actually correspond to Zone 1. The probability of the presence of flammable gases or vapors must be determined through area classification studies, as this determines the type of protection required (Ex d, Ex e, Ex ec, among others).
2. Ignoring the combustible gas or dust group.
Not all certified luminaires offer the same level of protection. Applications involving Group IIC gases, such as hydrogen or acetylene, require solutions with higher performance requirements compared to environments classified as IIA or IIB.
3. Failure to consider the temperature class (T-Class)
Selecting a luminaire whose maximum surface temperature exceeds the ignition point of the gas or dust present can generate significant operational risks. Validating whether the project requires T4, T5, or T6 is key to a safe specification.
4. Underestimating actual environmental conditions
Factors such as vibration, corrosion, extreme humidity, or the presence of chemicals can affect luminaire performance. Selecting equipment with adequate protection ratings (IP66, IP67), mechanical resistance, and anti-corrosion materials is essential to ensure long-term reliability.
5. Evaluating only the initial cost and not the total cost of operation
Although certified LED solutions may involve a higher initial investment compared to traditional technologies, they offer service lives exceeding 100,000 hours, lower energy consumption, and a significant reduction in maintenance interventions, especially in hard-to-reach areas.
6. Lack of specialized technical support.
Lighting in classified areas should not be treated as a standard procurement process. It requires process analysis, regulatory validation, photometric calculations, and proper selection of the Ex protection type to ensure compliance and operational performance.
